Celebrating spring with ‘culture pop’

Posted on October 21, 2014

Spring Day 2014 was celebrated by the Department of Marketing Management in cultural style.

As part of the day’s festivities, staff divided into two teams and played a very competitive, but fun game of 30 Seconds, before indulging in healthy chicken wraps. This was followed by refreshing spicy pineapple sticks, after which seven staff members participated in the 2km walk. The theme for this year’s Spring Day was celebrating 20 years of democracy, by sharing different culinary cultures. The Department did this by preparing a unique ‘culture pop’ dessert. This creative ‘culture stick’ was made up of four mini-desserts unique to South African culture. The desserts included a koeksister (Afrikaans), Lamington (English), Cape Malay and either a Jalebi, Ladoo or Coconut Ice (all Indian).

The Department also used this opportunity to expose its German visitor, Prof Holger Lütters, to the different cultures of South Africa. Prof Lütters visited the Department for two weeks in September to share his expertise in online research methodology. Prof Lütters not only collaborated with staff on research, but the Department ensured that he got the most out of his trip to South Africa by taking him on a safari weekend as well as a visit to Soweto and the Apartheid Museum.
