Tuks Marketing on the Move

Posted on February 22, 2013

Being a Tuks Marketing student will, however, mean something slightly different from 2013. From this year, the Department of Marketing Management will operate as a fully-fledged academic department since its split from Communication Management. In celebration of the Department’s new status and the arrival of the 2013 marketing students, a unique partnership was formed with the Gautrain. This partnership came about due to the link between the Department’s ‘on the move’ theme for the year and the Gautrain slogan ‘people on the move’.

To celebrate this, a special event was held in the Aula with two motivational speakers, both ex-marketing students from the Department, who shared the success they have achieved in their respective fields. Ms Lorinda Hern, co-founder of the Rhino Rescue Project, shared the value marketing has had in her career. Inspiring students with her insight on the role of marketing in her everyday life, Ms Melinda Bam, Miss SA 2011, commented that “marketing is the bouncing ball on campus and the launch event captured the vibe of studying marketing”.

The 1 000 red balloons donated by Gautrain were released after the programme in the Aula. As a special surprise, each first-year student also received a Gautrain gold card with a pre-loaded trip as a symbol of moving. This gesture was welcomed by the students with huge applause and excitement.

The Department also handed out text book prizes to lucky first-year students with the help of Phindile Mdluli from TuksFM. After releasing the balloons as a symbol of moving up with regard to their marketing studies, students got the opportunity to pledge their career aspirations by writing them on a banner, and it was clear that many of them plan to be people on the move in the marketing field.

Finally, students were treated to snacks in celebration of being a first-year marketing student at Tuks.

Worth noting is that the University of Pretoria was the first university in South Africa to offer a degree programme in Marketing when the first chair in Marketing Management was established as part of the then Department of Business Economics in 1970. The first degrees in BCom (Marketing Management) were awarded in March 1973.
