Honorary professors appointed in the Department of Marketing Management

Mr Brand Pretorius Mr Bonang Mohale

Mr Brand Pretorius is a well-known business man who started his career at Toyota South Africa. Following a number of management positions in research, planning, sales and marketing, he was appointed Managing Director of Toyota SA Marketing in 1988, whereafter he joined McCarthy Motor Holdings as Chief Executive, followed by the position of Chief Executive Officer of McCarthy Limited. Mr Pretorius currently serves as a Non-Executive Director on the boards of the Absa Group, Absa Bank, Reunert, Italtile, RGT Smart, Tata Africa Holdings and Tongaat Hulett.

Mr Pretorius is also a member of the advisory boards of the international consultancy firm Alexander Proudfoot and the Motor Industry Ombudsman of South Africa. National awards attained by Mr Pretorius include Junior Businessman of the Year (1985), Communicator of the Year (1994), Best Boss (1994), Automobile Man of the Year, the Manpower Award of Excellence (1995) and the Presidential Award for Excellence in Business Communication by the SA Chapter of the International Association of Business Communicators (1997). The South African Institute of Marketing Management honoured him with its Marketing Person of the Year award in November 2000.

He became a member of the SA Automotive Industry's Hall of Fame in March 2006, in recognition of his significant contribution to the industry. His first book, In the driving seat – lessons in leadership was published in February 2013.

Mr Bonang Mohale is currently the Chairperson and Country GM: Commercial of Shell South Africa. Previously, he was the Chief Executive Officer of Drake & Scull Facilities Management SA, Chief Executive: Shared services and associated companies of Sanlam, Executive Vice President at South African Airways, as well as Managing Director of Otis.

Mr Mohale started his career in the pharmaceutical industry, ending as Export Manager at Logos Pharmaceuticals after ten years. At Sanlam, he started an integrated marketing department for all divisions where he created a single brand for the group, CRM, optimising marketing spend and reducing costs for its 10 business units.

He holds an IMM diploma and also passed the Chartered Marketer board exams at IMM. He was awarded the South African Facilities Management Association President’s Award in 2003 and Personality of the Year award in 2007. Mr Mohale has been a guest on numerous TV, radio and magazine programmes.
