Students challenged by a fundraising/sponsorship strategy

Posted on March 17, 2014

The Phyllis Robertson Home is a non-profit organisation that care and provide accommodation for adult disabled persons. As the Home does not currently receive any subsidy, the running costs is much more than the income and the Home largely depends on sponsorships and fundraising events to generate funds.

As part of the challenge, the Phyllis Robertson Home presented an information session to the students, whereafter the student groups had the opportunity to visit the Home. The students then presented their fundraising strategies to the management team of the Home for approval.

Many student groups addressed the Home’s needs directly. For example, the ‘Green thumbs’ group presented a plan for a vegetable garden in order to reduce the cost of groceries per month. Another group, called ‘Providing for a rainy day’, had a plan to reduce the high costs associated with water bills every month by installing sponsored water storage tanks. Other groups took different routes by organising an urban soccer tournament and golf day. Several groups also decided to make use of different media to bring awareness to larger companies and got involved in assisting the Home with their already established ‘Club 1000 Stars’ project.

Mr.Stephan Smalberger, the Home’s manager, assisted by his management team, provided feedback to the student groups. He said that they were very excited about the various creative ideas the students proposed.

Student groups have until the end of May 2014 to execute their strategies and will use the Phillys Robertson Homes’ website and Facebook page to advertise their events and progress. To see what the students are up to, visit Phyllis Robertson Home.
