How to apply for residence placement

Prospective Applicants

Prospective undergraduate and postgraduate candidates can conveniently apply for accommodation alongside their study application through our online platform. No additional forms are required. Applications for the University of Pretoria become accessible from the 1st of March each year. While you can indicate your preferred residence on the application, securing a spot in that residence cannot be guaranteed.

Should you wish to apply for on-campus housing after submitting your UP study application, you have the option to do so via your UP Portal.

Important points to note:

Postgraduate Applicants: Postgraduate residence applications are exclusively open to students pursuing postgraduate study programs. These applications are reviewed after the student receives provisional admission to a postgraduate program.

Residence Preference: Students desiring a specific residence can indicate their preference within the designated space on the online application. However, it's important to understand that placement in a preferred residence is subject to availability, as the number of available spaces is limited.

Health Sciences Applications: Students applying for study programs within the Faculty of Health Science will initially be considered for placement at the Groenkloof or Hatfield campuses. Upon admission to such a program, students will be automatically considered for a residence at the Prinshof campus, contingent on availability of space.

Renewal of placement of current residing students

Existing residents are required to apply for the renewal of their accommodation placement annually. The application process is accessible through the UP Student Portal, commencing at the onset of the second semester. Relevant information can be found here.

Given the constraints of limited availabiloty, the re-allocation of residence placements for the subsequent year to all current residents is typically unfeasible. It's important to recognise that placement decisions are contingent upon academic merit.

New Senior Applications

Enrolled students who have not previously experienced residence living can also submit their applications through the UP Portal. The application process commences at the beginning of the second semester.

However, it's important to note that placement is not guaranteed and depends on availability. The demand for residences surpasses the number of available spots. Placements for students who haven't resided on campus before are also influenced by their academic achievements.
