Please find Prof Ruttkamp-Bloem's presentation attached. Prof Ruttkamp-Bloem has updated this version with comments made by participants at the first seminar and has also added a suggested reading list.

Unpacking the 'Home Principle' The core of the home principle is the belief that academic departments are the custodians of their subjects at the university. The issue is just as much one of academic integrity and accountability to one’s subject, as it is one of respecting expertise across departments. The focus of these discussions is finding a way to reconcile these sometimes (but not necessarily) contradicting issues in the most practical, collegial, and academically responsible manner possible.

In the first seminar, and outlined in the attached PowerPoint, Prof Ruttkamp-Bloem considered possible definitions of the home principle, its practical implications and the contexts in which it becomes a consideration. Specifically she considered two contexts in which she felt is necessary to defend the academic integrity of one’s subject as its custodian: 1) The context of a department teaching their own subject to students in other departments/faculties, and 2) The context of a department’s subject being taught by other departments/faculties to the students in such departments/faculties … or even to one’s own students.
