The Department of Anatomy at the University of Pretoria celebrated World Anatomy Day on the 21st of October under the theme “Me in Anatomy.” The event offered a heartfelt and humorous glimpse into the personal and academic journeys of postgraduate students across honours, master’s, and PhD levels.

Presentations ranged from research protocols to nearly completed projects and personal reflections, each capturing a unique perspective on life in anatomy. Some students expressed their experiences through creative artworks and evocative poems, while others used videos to take the audience on a journey through their haunted, yet rewarding, postgraduate research experience. The challenges faced along the way were humorously portrayed, with memorable references to Shrek and insightful reflections on growth and character development.
Topics explored included aspects such as the blood supply of the spinal cord, venous drainage of the brain, the morphology of midline cerebral structures, and nerves throughout the body. Presenters showcased their work using various modalities, ranging from osteological specimens to cadaveric samples and radiographical scans, illustrating the depth and diversity of anatomical exploration.
Attended by postgraduate students and staff, the event was filled with laughter, empathy, and inspiration. Through honest storytelling and creative expression, “Me in Anatomy” reminded everyone that the pursuit of anatomy is not only a scientific journey but also a deeply human one.
