Medical Microbiology

Welcome to the Department of Medical Microbiology at the University of Pretoria.

The School of Medicine’s Department of Medical Microbiology is a vibrant centre with motivated scholars, inspired pathologists and scientists that aspire for excellence. The department provides a diagnostic service, clinical consultative service, teaching and is also involved in research amongst other responsibilities. The diagnostic laboratory is SANAS accredited and routine tests include bacterial identification and susceptibility testing, identification of parasites and fungi, as well as molecular testing. The department offers clinical service to numerous clinics in the greater Tshwane area, as well as to different hospitals, including the Steve Biko Academic Hospital, Kalafong, Tembisa, Mamelodi and Pretoria West hospitals.

The Medical Microbiology department offers teaching to both undergraduate and postgraduate students. Medicine, dentistry, nursing, physiotherapy, and occupational therapy are all fields taught at the undergraduate level. Medical doctors that specialise in Medical Microbiology receive postgraduate training, as do Bachelor of Science: Honours, Masters and PhD candidates, as well as postdoctoral fellows.
