The Department of Marketing Management acknowledges its top achievers

Posted on June 24, 2024

The annual prize-giving for the top Marketing Management students took place on 18 April 2024, prior to their graduation ceremony. The Department of Marketing Management hosted the event, which honoured these remarkable individuals for their achievements and hard work throughout their academic careers. Proud sponsors of the PPS prize, Mangali Ngcobo and Susan Myburgh (PPS representatives), along with the professors, lecturers, parents, and of course our top students, were in attendance.

During the event, which was an informal gathering, students liaised with the lecturers and received encouragement to keep striving for professional success. The parents attended to celebrate the achievements and gain insight into their children's performance. The best marketing students received awards and certificates from the Department, and had a chance to have their loved ones photographed by a professional photographer.

Prof Anneli Douglas, a Tourism Management lecturer in the Department, received the Stephan and Pierre Viljoen Award to the value of R55 000. The Stephan and Pierre Viljoen Award is a significant honour bestowed upon a qualified PhD student or staff member each year. Students can utilise the prize to obtain further industrial and/or academic experience in the field of marketing management by attending a high-level scholarly conference, taking a course, or visiting a reputable international institution and/or a marketing management expert. Academics can take a specialised marketing management course or present a paper at an international conference.

Prof Douglas plans to invite Prof Inversini from Ecole hôtelière de Lausanne and execute a collaborative research project. Prof Inversini will also be involved in the postgraduate lectures in the Department and host a brown bag lecture for the Faculty of Economic and Management Sciences and/or a research seminar to the Department. This project will be most beneficial to Prof Douglas’ career development. Prof Yolanda Jordaan, Head of the Department, presented this prestigious award to Prof Douglas on behalf of Jacques Viljoen, custodian of the Stephan and Pierre Viljoen Award.

Awards (sponsored by PPS) were allocated in the following categories:
  • The Best BCom (Marketing Management) student in 2023 was awarded to Chihoriem Eresia-Eke, who is currently enrolled as an honours student in the Department. Chihoriem received a prize to the value of R4 000. She, along with two fellow honours students, also won the L’Oréal National Brandstorm competition, which is scheduled to take place in London from 16 to 22 June 2024, to represent South Africa and compete against 42 other countries. As a department, we are very proud of her.
