International editor and scholar visits Marketing @ UP

The Department of Marketing Management at the University of Pretoria proudly hosted Professor Charles Ray Taylor from 10 to 14 October 2022. Prof Taylor is the John A. Murphy Professor of Marketing at the Villanova School of Business and Senior Research Fellow at the Center for Marketing and Consumer Insights. He is the current (long-serving) Editor-in-Chief of the International Journal of Advertising, a top-rated journal in the marketing discipline. He has been listed as one of the top two percent of scholars in the world according to a marketing field analysis conducted by Stanford University researchers.
 
During his visit, Prof Taylor engaged with both students and staff to share his wisdom and experience as a top global scholar. He delivered guest lectures to the Marketing Management third-year and honours students, which added value to their preparations for their industry client projects. He also engaged with staff members on their research and provided many insights and advice to guide current and future research endeavours.
 
Prof Taylor holds many accolades, among them the Ivan L. Preston Award for Outstanding Lifetime Contribution to Advertising Research from the American Academy of Advertising, as well as the Flemming Hansen Award for Outstanding Contribution to Advertising from the European Advertising Academy. His research has received best paper awards from several top journals in the marketing field, including the Journal of Advertising (twice), the Journal of Consumer Affairs, and the Journal of International Marketing, among others. Aside from his academic work, he has provided consulting services to many companies, and regularly engages in media interviews with major media outlets. He is also a Senior Contributor to Forbes.com.
 
Drawing from his vast experience as a scholar and a journal editor, Prof Taylor also presented a very informative Brown Bag lecture to the Faculty of Economic and Management Sciences. In his presentation, titled ‘Tips and tricks for publishing your work’, he outlined strategies to build good co-author relationships and to approach journals and journal editors, as well as important aspects of good academic articles. He encouraged the audience of researchers to believe in the quality of their work, emphasising that research from Africa is growing in importance globally – particularly in the field of marketing.
 
The visit by Prof Taylor was a great success and his engagement with staff and students added much value to their learning and research journeys. The Department wishes to express gratitude to the benefactors of the Stephan and Pierre Viljoen Award, which made this visit possible. The 2022 recipient of this award, Prof Tania Maree, used the funds to invite Prof Taylor to the University of Pretoria.
