Preparing students for the world of work

Posted on May 10, 2023

On 4 May 2023, the Faculty of Theology and Religion partnered with the Department of Career Services so together they could host a career fair for those aspiring to work in the fields of ministry and missions, social service and community outreach.

This half-day event took place in the Rautenbach Hall, on the Hatfield Campus of the University of Pretoria, where close to twenty exhibitors helped the students in attendance gain some sense of what awaits them when their careers begin.

Amongst the exhibitors could be counted representatives from the National Defence Force, the Tshwane Leadership Foundation, the Centre for Public Life and Security in Africa, SOS Children’s Village, Gracepoint Church and many more.

Like other young adults, those studying Theology and Religion are always keen to find gainful employment when they finished their studies, so events like these are instrumental in giving them a chance to refine their vocational plans after graduation.

As put so clearly by Prof Jaco Beyers, the Deputy Dean for Teaching and Learning in the Faculty, “the world of work is being transformed on a daily basis.  Students entering it, therefore, need to prepare themselves for the future of work.

“Learning needs to lead to opportunities for earning.  Thus, this career fair was a facilitated event where students encountered employment possibilities, giving them a chance to align their CVs with vocational realities.”
