Ninnaku Oberholzer, a postgraduate student in the Faculty of Theology and Religion at the University of Pretoria, has been accepted to King's College London to pursue a MA Christianity and the Arts as part of a selected group of 25 students.

This specialised one year course investigates how Christian scripture, beliefs, and practices have found expression in art for over 2,000 years and works in partnership with the National Gallery to allow students to learn in context of art museums, with access to related collections in the Courtauld Gallery, and the Victoria and Albert Museum.

She has also been awarded a full scholarship from the King's College London Theological Trust in order to be able to attend. Only 1 international scholarship is offered each year and in order to be a recipient the scholar's work must show great academic potential as well as impact social change. This scholarship allows for a full tuition cover as well as a maintenance fee.

In her present post-graduate studies, she focuses on a feminist approach to theology based on Mary of Nazareth (mother of Jesus) and explored through Christian art, using art and the figure of Mary to trace how Christianity developed certain views pertaining to women whilst silencing them in the process. Mary as a starting point explores an old tradition of how the female image was included in the divine but later 'written out' of text and tradition by a patriarchal structure - luckily remnants of this earlier tradition still exist in Christian art and can be traced through centuries.

She aims in her academic work to use early Christian art as a type of text to develop a theology surrounding Mary for Reformed tradition in order to counter the overtly male and patriarchal language and images found in Reformed theology whilst creating space for women, children, and marginalised groups who are reflected in the image of God.
