Letter to Theology students

Posted on October 14, 2016

Dear Student of Theology,

First and foremost, I want to extend my sincerest compassion to each and every one of you for the current state of uncertainty and even turmoil experienced in the tertiary education sector in South Africa.

Although there are many diverse interpretations of the situation and even contradictory voices as to how to address it, one point is clear: the financial viability of tertiary education in this country is now out of hand. As epitomised by the national #FeesMustFall student protests, many students do not have the resources for their studies. This matter has to be rectified.

We belong to a highly ranked University and to a Faculty with a proud history of academic excellence. Our Centenary is around the corner and we want to celebrate our values of inclusivity and diversity: “Gateway to …”

We are fully committed to completing the academic year and the University recognizes the concern of parents and students who are anxious to continue their academic programmes.

In the light of recent violent incidents at other universities and in the interest of the safety of students and staff, it is important for the University to find ways of mitigating disruptions while guaranteeing quality education.

The Faculty of Theology will, with immediate effect, go on line and off campus with regard to both tuition and assessments. There will thus be no contact tuition on campus.

The content of study guides remain in effect, apart from locations and/or pedagogy. The timeframes set out in the study guides remain unchanged. Each lecturer will be in continuous contact with her/his students via clickUP. We therefore request you to check clickUP frequently.

We will not compromise on our high standards and students and parents can rest assured that we will do our level best to maintain our standards. I thank you for your understanding and co-operation.

I also take this opportunity to thank the staff members who have made many sacrifices for the sake of our students.

Yours sincerely,

PROF J BUITENDAG DEAN: FACULTY OF THEOLOGY
