Tienie Botha, a son-in-law, said yesterday that van Wyk was in hospital recently for a week due to a lung infection. He did not fully recover and passed away quietly at home.
Van Wyk carried his years well. In October last year during the 100th birthday celebrations, he jokingly commented on how he “walks like an old man”.
His wife, Christene (95), who is now bedridden, was widely known for her tour company Christine van Wyk Tours.
