Prof Antoinette Lombard, Head of Department of Social Work and Criminology at the University of Pretoria Becomes First South African Woman to Lead the International Association of Schools of Social Work

Posted on June 04, 2024

For the past 90 years, the International Association of Schools of Social Work (IASSW) has represented the interests of social work education, focusing on education, advocacy, policy, and member services. Guided by a vision to promote global excellence and scholarship in pursuit of a just and equitable world, the IASSW is dedicated to fostering a community of social work educators, supporting mutual exchanges of research and resources.

Professor Antoinette Lombard, Head of the Department of Social Work and Criminology at the University of Pretoria, has become the first South African woman elected as president of the IASSW.  The announcement was made at the annual General Assembly in April 2024 held in Panama. The four-year term will end in 2028.

At the Faculty of Humanities, we are immensely proud of her remarkable achievement. Professor Lombard's extensive knowledge and dedication have significantly impacted our department, and we are confident she will bring these same values to her new role.

The IASSW's work is crucial, having had a positive impact on the international community. Leading such an organization requires dedication to community upliftment, extensive experience in social work, and a strong vision for addressing societal challenges. Professor Lombard’s election is a testament to her passion for community development, evidenced by her nearly 40 years of teaching, research, and service on multiple councils. Her international experience includes serving as vice president of the Association for Schools of Social Work in South Africa (ASASWEI) and representing ASASWEI on the IASSW board. She has also chaired the Global Agenda for Social Work and Social Development Taskforce.

In her vision for IASSW Professor Lombard  aims to build on the achievements of the IASSW's previous leadership, positioning the IASSW as a global leader sensitive to societal realities and challenges". We look forward to her contributions on this international platform and extend our best wishes as she embarks on this new journey
