Faculty Achievements!

•  Ben Schoeman (School of the Arts)
  • played a piano recital at the prestigious St Mary’s Perivale Concert series in London.
  • played an extract of Beethoven’s 7^th Symphony at the memorial service for the late Archbishop Desmond Tutu and Lindiwe Mabuza at St Martin in the Fields in London.
  • was invited to give a lecture and piano recital at the Academy of Music in Kraków, Poland, and also presented masterclasses to 17 piano students at the Academy.
• Innocent Pikirayi (Dean’s Office) has been appointed by the NRF to the national panel evaluating the Department of Science and Innovation’s South African Palaeoscience Strategy.
• Sandy Africa (Dean’s Office) has been appointed to the board of trustees of the African Policing Civilian Oversight Forum.
• Theo van Wyk (School of the Arts) is the only musician from the African continent to be invited as recitalist and panel member for the 1^st International Online Organ Festival, hosted in Pretoria.
• Zitha Mokomane (Sociology) has been appointed as one of two conveners of specialist committees to serve on the NRF Executive Evaluation Committee, the highest authority in the evaluation process of the NRF.

• Alf Nilsen (Sociology) was interviewed about what role the Islamophobic conspiracy theory ‘love jihad’ plays in the politics of Hindu nationalist statecraft in India today on The Nordic Asia Podcast.
• Bibi Burger (Afrikaans) published the article A short story by Ghana’s Ama Ata Aidoo offers a view of humanity’s place in the world on The Conversation.
• Elmien Claassens (Social Work & Criminology) was interviewed about what communication in families entails on PoortFM.
• Nokuthula Mazibuko Msimang (Artist in Residence, Humanities) published the article Celebrating Dolly Rathebe, South Africa’s original black woman superstar on The Conversation.
• Yu-Shan Wan and Maxi Schoeman (Political Sciences) published the article African states need a vision for relations with the Indo-Pacific on The Conversation.

• Neo Mohlabane and Malehoko Tshoaedi (Sociology) published the article What Is a Woman? A Decolonial African Feminist Analysis of Womanhoods in Lesotho in South African Review of Sociology.
• Oko Enworo (Sociology) published the article Acceptable minimum threshold of universal access to services for women in Nigeria: A review of selected issues in the National Gender Policy in the Journal of International Women’s Studies.
• Simamkele Dlakavu (Sociology) published the article Zulu Love Letter: Moving Black women from margins to the centre in narrating South Africa’s political transition in Agenda.
• Shakila Dada, Adele May, Kirsty Bastable, Alecia Samuels, Kerstin Tonsing, Jenny Wilder, Maureen Casey, Constance Ntuli (CAAC) and Vasudhevan Reddy published the article The involvement matrix as a framework for involving youth with severe communication disabilities in developing health education materials in Health Expectations.
