Dear Humanities Colleagues

Faculty Achievements!

  • Carrick Keating and Kagiso Masinda (School of the Arts: Drama) were awarded first prize in the JOMBA! Open Horizons (short form) category for their screen dance Fenya.
  • Dewet Swanepoel (Speech-language Pathology- and Audiology) was awarded an Academy of Science of South Africa (ASSAF) membership.
  • Tim Forssman (Archaeology) was awarded a grant by the NRF under the African Origin Platform (AOP) which supports research, skills development, and infrastructure in the palaeosciences.
  • Miles Warrington (School of the Arts: Classical music) will be featured in the Purpur Music Festival that will be taking place on the 9th of October. The Festival hosts New Music parallel to sound, art, video, dance, theatre and various other art forms, and showcases a variety of South African and international performers.
  • Hannes Engelbrecht (Historical and Heritage Studies) coordinated the  fourth annual Heritage Seminar. The seminar is a collaboration between the Department of Historical and Heritage Studies and the South African Heritage Resources Agency (SAHRA). This year’s theme was “Heritage Evolution: Heritage and Tourism Technology”.

Scheduled Events

  • Art, Access and Agency Conference Keynote event: Flowers, sex, loss and labour will take place on Saturday 9 October from 16:00 – 16:50. Registration beforehand is necessary to receive the Zoom link.
  • The Afrikaans Department will host the second annual Van Rensburg Memorial Lecture on the 21st of October (14:00 – 17:00). RSVP
  • Corinne Sandwith Inaugural Lecture: The Social Lives of Print: Circuits, Citation and Public Debates will take place on the 26th of October at 18:00.
  • The Tangible Heritage Conservation programme (School of the Arts) will host the Global Consortium for the Preservation of Cultural Heritage’s annual meeting between 28-29 October 2021.
  • Call for Papers for the hybrid conference on Transnational Contact Zones: African and South Asian Sexualities and Genders which will take place on 26- 28 July 2022. The first submission deadline is 30 November 2021. Click here to submit your abstract and here to view the advert.
