Dear Humanities Colleagues

Thank you for helping us complete this first semester! I am grateful to see that in addition to our teaching and supervision duties, our Faculty has also featured in the media. Here is this week’s list of our highlights: 

• Prof Norman Duncan talked to the Tukkievaria about how “Universities are required to contribute in a much more intentional manner to the development and transformation of society’
• Shingairai Chigeza’s (Psychology) article about how “Virtual families are important sources of support during lockdown” featured on the UP website
• Chris Changwe Nshimbi (Political Sciences & GOVINN) published an article entitled “Why the African Union has failed to ‘silence the guns’. And some solutions” in The Conversation
• Emma Ruttkamp-Bloem (Philosophy) featured in an article entitled “South African professor elected to chair UNESCO expert group on AI” published in Engineering News
• Abdi Samatar (Political Sciences) featured on BBC’s programme Focus on Africa discussing the evolving situation in Ethiopia and an article loosely based on his opinion piece titled “Ethnic chauvinists might derail civic victory in Ethiopia as election looms” appeared in the Business Day

Members of our Faculty have also published the following:

• Chris Changwe Nshimbi (Political Sciences) co-authored the book “Borders, Mobility, Regional Integration and Development: Issues, Dynamics and Perspectives in West, Eastern and Southern Africa” with Inocent Moyo 
• Mzikazi Nduna (CSA&G) has just published the monograph “A Magnifying glass and a fine-tooth comb: Understanding girls’ and young women’s sexual vulnerability”
• Wilhelm Jordaan (Psychology) recently published his book “Sondesemoer!”

We also have a number of events taking place that involve our Faculty members: 

• Alf Nilsen (Sociology) will be participating in the "Native (Be)longings: Discourses of Indigeneity" at the Belongg Online Literature Festival on 5 July 2020
• School of the Arts at the University of Pretoria is hosting the World Congress of Music Therapy on 7 and 8 July 2020 in collaboration with the South African Music Therapy Association (SAMTA) and the World Federation of Music Therapy (WFMT)
• Molly Brown (English), Tharina Guse (Psychology) and Oscar Eybers (Unit for Academic Literacy) are participating in the International Forum 2020: “Wellbeing and Subjectivities across the Global South” between 1-31 July 2020. All our staff and students are welcome to participate.
