David Kabwa Represents South Africa at the Commonwealth Youth Parliament

Posted on November 26, 2019

David Kabwa, a former Chairperson of House Humanities, is a student leader committed to helping others overcome their circumstances. His compassion and political training saw him re-elected this year as president of the SRC – one of only a few candidates to achieve such a feat.

David is also a top athlete – at the 2017 World Championship he was the gold medallist in the Union Internationale de Pentathlon Moderne (UIPM) laser-run.

And among his academic achievements, David is also the Chairperson of the Second Commission in The South African Youth Parliament.

For him, ‘The South African Youth Sector Parliament is an initiative that is conducted on a yearly basis through the Gauteng Legislature to uphold the motto of the Legislature which is “your view, our vision”. Each sector of society is offered the opportunity to engage directly with high level government officials through the sector parliaments.’

As a result of the superb work he has done this year, David was selected to represent the South African Youth Parliament in the 10th Commonwealth Youth Parliament taking place in New Delhi, India from the 24th-29th of November 2019.

The Commonwealth Youth Parliament (CYP) provides an opportunity for young people from Commonwealth countries to learn about how politics and parliamentary processes work. And more importantly, it gives participants an opportunity to learn more about the key institutions that underpin freedom, democracy and good governance. By working with young Members of Parliament, the programme aims to shape young individuals into empowered leaders to better serve their communities and their countries.

The programme is filled with educational sessions and learning opportunities, some of which include practical activities. Participants have a chance to practise caucusing, meet members of parliament from the state that they are visiting, having mock press conferences and network with like-minded people. Since this year’s programme is being held in India, mock assembly sessions will be held in the house of the Delhi Legislative Assembly. This is the first time India hosts the event and the organisers hope the Parliament will garner some positive interest from younger Indians.

Being selected for this program is a huge honour and a great achievement. Less than 50 students from around the world are chosen to participate in this annual programme. David, who has already proven himself to be a great competitor and leader, is sure to do the university and our faculty proud!
