Department of Historical and Heritage Studies holds annual Honours Research Colloquium

Posted on June 05, 2019

On Saturday 1 June 2019 the Department of Historical and Heritage studies held its annual Honours Research Report Colloquium in the Auditorium and Postgraduate Commons in the Library. Altogether twenty-eight honours students studying either History or Heritage and Cultural Tourism presented their research work which they are preparing for their Research Reports (GES 770 and EFK 757).

The topics are selected by each student and they are mentored individually by a supervisor in the Department. The History presentations included topics from a very wide range of themes relating to cultural, political, diplomatic, environmental and legal history focusing on aspects such as revolution, tyrants, genocide, music, xenophobia, minority groups, education, caste systems, ivory trade and mixed marriages. The Heritage and Cultural Tourism studies addressed topics related to various niche types of tourism including: culinary, cultural, environmental, digital, dark (thanatourism), film and sport while others focused on aspects related to the legalities as well as global and local tourism.

After each session both lecturing staff and fellow honours students asked questions and gave constructive criticism to each of the presenters. For many this was the first presentation in a public arena and for some the first paper on their CVs. It was a very successful event in what has become an annual calendar date for the department.
