American Students from University of Florida at UP Again

Posted on May 14, 2019

Just on a decade and half ago the University of Florida (UF) chose UP as a partner in their study abroad program to South Africa.  This year some twenty-one students from a wide range of study directions including engineering, natural sciences, health sciences, business administration, humanities and social sciences were again at UP in May 2019 with their Professors Todd Leedy and Regan Garner.

The UF students again attended a series of lectures covering an overview of the history of South Africa presented by Prof Karen Harris, Head of the Department of Historical and Heritage Studies, as well as lectures by Roland Henwood of the Department of Political Sciences who reflected on the political situation including the recent national elections. The purpose of these sessions, which were very well received, is to expose the students to the workings of South African society.

The UF students also engaged with the Centre for Aids and Gender Studies, went on a UP Campus Tour with the Honours students in Heritage and Cultural Tourism from the Department of Historical and Heritage Studies and enjoyed a UP-UF braai/barbeque. Prof Leedy also presented a seminar to the Department’s postgraduate honours students on “Publishing Your Article? Ideas and Advice for Emergent Scholars”.
