The Broken Whole

Posted on April 05, 2016

This compelling choreographic work pulls at the threads of culture, identity and language of our complex social fabric. It surfaces the tensions in dismantling icons and traditions that captures disparate social dynamics. In doing so, it speaks to individual fears, anxieties and vulnerabilities in questioning our contemporary encounters.

Sidiya expertly weaves together dance, text and storytelling to create a compelling choreographic work characterised by staccato rhythms and explosive dynamics that questions the nature of being human in a diverse society.

Sidiya was a dancer for Moving Into Dance Mopahatong (MIDM) for a number of years. He was also appointed as Afro-fusion dance teacher and rehearsal director for MIDM.  He performed nationally and internationally with MIDM and facilitated dance workshops abroad.  His work abroad includes teaching African dance and choreography at Bennington College in the USA and performing for the ACE Dance and Music Company in the UK. He was awarded the Most Outstanding Dancer prize in a Contemporary Style at the 2007 Dance Umbrella festival, won a Standard Bank Ovation award in 2012 and acted as dance captain for the 2010 FIFA World Cup Opening Concert. He acted as the artistic director of, and a choreographer for, the acclaimed Vuyani Dance Theatre company.  Sidiya choreographed the acclaimed dance production Siva that premiered at the National Arts Festival in 2015. He embarked on a career as independent artist in 2016.

The drama department is proud to be associated with this outstanding artist.
