UP Drama presents: 'I Am a Camera'

Posted on July 23, 2009

I Am aCamera can be classified as a romantic comedy with serious undertones, mirroring the approaching evil of the Second World War. The plot focuses on the rare friendship between the struggling young writer, Chris, and the cabaret artist and wannabe actress, Sally Bowles. He earns a living giving English lessons in Berlin. As a writer, he is the “camera” in the play, turning the “photos” into writing. She sings in the sleazy Lady Windermere Nightclub, and flirts with rich men, until her mother arrives on the scene.

The style of the production is minimalist, and the director, cast, crew and designers focussed on the reconstruction of the Berlin of the 30’s. I Am a Camera is directed by Estelle Zeeman, with Abri le Roux as assistant director and scenographic advisor, and Nico Scheepers as choreographer. Sally is played by Gretha Pietersen, and Chris by Emile Hager. The technical production support will be provided by UP Arts.

A real treat and must see for theatregoers, 1930s era music lovers and the general public.
