The Faculty bids farewell to Prof Weideman Albert Weideman has recently retired as director of the Unit for Academic Literacy. He is not going to say farewell to the academic world, however, but is taking up a position as professor and head of the Department of English in the University of the Free State. This was the second academic department (the first was Latin) where he taught at the beginning of his career. Before joining the University of Pretoria, he was Director:  Professional Programmes in the Faculty of Education of the University of the Western Cape, and before that director of the Centre for Education Development (CENEDUS) of the University. His main focus while at UP was on assessing academic literacy, and on the foundations of applied linguistics. He has recently been nominated to head up the newly established Inter-institutional Centre for Language Development and Assessment (ICELDA), the now formalized partnership between a number of multi-lingual universities (UP, Stellenbosch, and Northwest) – a partnership that the University of the Free State has now also been invited to join. of Stellenbosch The Faculty would like to thank Prof Weideman for his valued contribution to the Faculty and wishes him success in his new position.
