This series of cut-up poems was exhibited in the Old Arts-Building 5 to 14 October 2009. The logical name of the exhibition came naturally to the group of writers, resulting in the very characteristic display of poems hung on lines.
The opening night was held on the 7th of October. A lovely evening with poems, speeches, thanksgiving, sherry, loads of open sandwiches and delectable strawberries; organized by Leti Kleyn (Creative Writing lecturer) and Luzaan Pieters (a first year Creative Writing student). Poems were read to starlight:
‘(de) part absurd;
Oh Sartre ,
we are deemed to
exit
curiously
blank‘
• • •
‘we have doubt packed up in the concept of our lives discernable’
• • •
‘dog chemists are akin to eating great fiction’
• • •
‘Shakespeare was a human
myth, a sexually desiring gent.
a tragic hero of Western madness’
This was an extremely delightful opportunity for our young Creative Writing artists to display their talented genes. Very few students get opportunities like this one. We dearly hope that this will not be a passing trend, but that each successive year will bring more talent to be moulded and displayed at such wonderful exhibitions!
*Try it yourself: find a smart sounding piece of writing – preferably philosophical, because philosophers use big, crazy words. Cut it into words or phrases and, for fear of sounding stupid, paste them down as you pull them out of a hat – this way your excuse is not a lack of talent. Vóila! Display your poem at the next cut-up poetry exhibition!
