(NEW) Public Intellectuals Workshop: 29 Jan

Posted on January 25, 2010

Anyone interested in this field of academic endeavour (which is an important element of so-called ‘community engagement’) is encouraged to participate in these sessions, both for reasons of collegiality (we can help each other acquire the requisite skills) and in order to develop a culture of public intellectualism in the faculty.

If we want to keep the Humanities alive in this country, and to ensure that they thrive at this university, it is incumbent on all of us to explore ways in which the results of our inquiries can best be communicated in the public domain. It is certainly vital to publish for one’s academic peers; it is also important to communicate with the wider public.

The first Public Intellectuals session will be held on 29 January 2010 , and will be presented by the Centre for Alternative and Augmentative Communication. Professor Juan Bornman and colleagues will reflect on the issues arising from an impaired ability to communicate, and provide some insight into the strategies for alternative and augmentative communication available to people suffering from impaired ability in this regard. They will highlight the ways in which their own work contributes to the development of these strategies.

Date: 29 January 2010
Time: 12h00 – 13h30 (tea and coffee will be served)
Venue: Room 3-15, Centre for Alternative and Augmentative Communication, Communication              Pathology Building
