It is, however, more difficult to distribute the money for published conference proceedings. Our faculty has submitted 8 published papers in the category “conference proceedings”. The DoE merely allocated an amount of money to us for submissions in this category, and they do not tell us which of these submissions were successful, and which were not successful. We only know that we have earned 2.25 units, while we submitted 8 published papers. We now have to distribute the money amongst the authors of all 8 submissions, which in effect means that successful submissions subsidise unsuccessful submissions. This is, of course, not fair.
Two of the conference proceedings were written by a UP Professor (Prof. Danie Prinsloo) and a non-UP professor. This means that these two units count for only one UP-unit. In total we therefore have 7 UP units. The DoE, however, allocated 2.25 units to us, and we therefore received 2.25 X R11 000 = R24750 for submissions in this category. This means that each unit has the value of R3 535-71. In some cases there are 2 UP professors who have earned 1 unit. They then have to share the R3 535-71.
The money will be paid into your research accounts as soon as possible according to the formulae above. Please inform Riana Venter if she has to create new research accounts for new staff members.
