Posted on April 19, 2010

An audience of 1,400 guests and students celebrated the 10th Pro Medica Lecture recently. The five tenors of the Department of Latin, accompanied by trumpet and organ, joined the audience in singing Gaudeamus Igitur, a two hundred year old student song. What an experience!

Prof Pieter Carstens of the Department Public Law was the guest speaker at this festive occasion. The theme was "MEDICUS CAVEAT": Beware, Physician! Prof Carstens captivated the audience with an energetic recital of a Historical Perspective of Medical Negligence. He succeeded in keeping the attention of more than a thousand students! The students attending this prestigious event take the subject Medical Terminology which is based on Latin and Greek. MTL is compulsory in the following fields of study: MBChB, BVSc, BScBiol, BAMBK, BDiet, BoccTher, BRad, BCur and BChD.

Five outstanding achievers in MTL of 2009 received Gold (Aurea) or Silver (Argentea) medals. The student with the highest average received a cash prize of R1 000 from PPS. PPS has been a sponsor of this event for more than 10 years. The splendid evening was concluded with a reception and a feast of Pizza, wine, fruit and “koeksisters”!
