The first concert, a piano recital by the pianist Ruth Goveia, will take place in the Musaion on Friday evening, 27 August at 19:30. She will perform the complete (Books I and II) set Davidsbündlertänze, Op. 6, by Schumann, as well as the Piano Sonata in B minor, Op. 58 by Chopin.
Tickets will be sold at the door at R25 and R50.
Wednesday, 1 September, will be Chopin day. At a lunch hour concert at 12:30, talented young pianists such as Misha Meyer, Braam van Eeden, Chani Jonker and Frants Preis will play a selection of Nocturnes, Etudes, Impromptus and Polonaises by Chopin.
Entry to this concert will be FREE.
On Wednesday, 1 September, the Chopin evening concert will be held in the Musaion at 19:30. The ‘cellist Berthine van Schoor and the pianist Anneke Lamont will perform the Sonata for Cello and Piano, Op.65, whilst the UP Trio – Nina Phillips (piano), Calayde Davey (violin), and Neil van Zyl (‘cello) – will play two movements from Chopin’s Piano Trio, Op. 8. Also on the programme will be the Andante spianato et Grande Polonaise, Op. 22, played by the pianist Janette Rottcher, as well as the second and third Piano Scherzi, played by the pianists Sophia Wu and Frants Preis respectively. Art works from Poland with Chopinas theme will be exhibited in the Musaion foyer on the evening. This exhibition, as well as the posters and programmes for the concert, is presented and sponsored by the Embassy of Poland.
On Thursday, 2 September, the Schumann evening concert will take place in the Musaion at 19:30. The programme will consist of well-known vocal works as well as organ works by this composer. Artists appearing will be the soprano Antoinette Olivier with the pianist Wessel van Wyk in a performance of the song cycle,Frauenliebe und Leben, Op. 42. After two of the Four Sketches for Organ, Op.58, played by the organist Hentus van Rooyen, the soprano Deirdre Blignaut will sing some of Schumann’s best-loved songs, such as Widmung, Der Nussbaum and Mondnacht, with van Wyk at the piano once more. The evening’s recital will close with a performance of the song cycle Dichterliebe, Op. 48, sung by the young baritone Christopher Vale with Anneke Lamont at the piano.
