The seminar usually takes place in October and is therefore known by everyone as the “Lenteseminaar” (Spring Seminar). Presentations are aimed at Home Language as well as First and Second Additional Language teachers of Afrikaans from Pretoria, but also from a wide area that includes schools from Gauteng, North West, Mpumalanga and Limpopo.

This year four presentations were delivered: Prof Andries Bezuidenhout (UP) talked about using Afrikaans music and music lyrics to encourage learners’ interest in poetry; Mrs Laura Willer from the Technical High School in Potchefstroom and part-time lecturer at NWU shared her years of experience in teaching creative writing and presented a workbook she has written; Ms Marelize Swanepoel from High School Bastion illustrated her own use of power point presenations to engage learners in the Afrikaans classroom and Mr Dolf Jordaan and Dr Ronel Callaghan (Education Innovation, UP) brought the availability of various online e-resources for the teaching of Afrikaans under the audience’s attention.

Like every year, several publishing houses involved in Afrikaans teaching publications had the chance to promote their products by way of exhibitions and/or a short presentation. After lunch the well-known and popular Coenie de Villiers was the celebrity guest who ended the day on a high note.
