(NEW) Hein Willemse speaks at CASAS and the Suidoosterfees

Posted on February 07, 2011

Firstly he attended an occasion at the Centre for Advanced Studies of African Society (CASAS) being led by Prof Kwesi Kwaa Prah where Afrikaans language varieties were discussed. His paper was titled "Afrikaans varieties: Preliminary notes on the multi-faceted story of speaking Afrikaans”. The main tenet of his contribution was that the multi-facetedness of the speakers of Afrikaans did not reflect in the conceptualization of standard Afrikaans; that a variety of subaltern voices were consciously ignored in the standardization of Afrikaans with regard to grammar, vocabulary and pronunciation; that the privileging of the standard variety not only pertains to linguistic matters, but also embodies historical socio-political preferences and that similar processes underlie the nature of written Afrikaans. Lastly he made a plea for a re-conceptualization of Standard Afrikaans. Some of the other speakers included members of the Afrikaans Language Commission of the SA Akademie vir Wetenskap en kuns like Mr Tom McLachlan, Professors Ernst Kotze en Frank Hendricks; members of the Afrikaanse Taalraad including Mr Christo van de Rheede and Mrs Ria Olivier and well-known researchers in like Prof Neville Alexander and Dr Dirk van Schalkwyk.

Secondly, Prof Willemse attended the Suidoosterfees in Cape Town where he was part of a panel (part of Jakes Gerwel’s Roots series) on the Legacy of the writer Adam Small who turns 75 on 21 December 2011. Other participants included Professors Hennie van Coller and Joan Hambidge and Dr Fernal Abrahams. Among other things, Adam Small’s position in the Afrikaans canon was discussed, including the fact that the Hertzog Prize has never been awarded to him.
