This lecture looks at the reception of Vergil in some 20th century poetry in English. It considers the use of Vergil’s pastoral Eclogues in political contexts by Robert Frost in the USA in the 1930s and 1960s and by Seamus Heaney in Northern Ireland around 2000. It also looks at earlier, complex receptions of his epic Aeneid by Allen Tate and Robert Lowell in the USA and by W.H.Auden, and at some treatments by female poets of Dido, the poem’s leading female character.
Prof. Harrison has published extensively on various authors and topics in Latin literature, among them the ancient novel, Horace and Vergil and their reception in modern literature.
