(NEW) UK ESRC: Call for proposals for international collaborative research projects

Posted on April 18, 2011

The UK Economic and Social Research Council is currently inviting proposals for international collaborative research projects under the ‘Rising Powers and Independent Futures’ initiative as a major investment contributing to its three priorities, especially Economic Performance and Sustainable Growth; and Vibrant and Fair Society.

This initiative therefore focuses on the implications of the Rising Powers for the rest of the world (paying attention to both developed and developing countries), and on how the Rising Powers’ interactions with each other and other countries are changing.

Applications are expected to focus on one or more of the themes below from an interdisciplinary perspective and international comparative and/or collaborative work is welcome. The three themes are:
  • Causes, sustainability and competitiveness
  • Global and regional governance and the balance of power
  • Well-being and equity
The call has a budget of £3.3M available for Research Projects. The ESRC welcomes Research Grant Proposals with total costs of between £200k and £750k.

This call specifically encourages the fostering of international collaborations. Therefore, while applications need to be lead by a UK based principle investigator we are actively encouraging the inclusion of Overseas Co-investigators under the ESRC International Co-Investigators policy.

This call for research projects follows an earlier call under the initiative for international interdisciplinary networks and visiting fellowships. Of the 9 projects commissioned, three involved collaborators from South Africa. It is also expected that a number of applications will be made from international collaborations established through the ESRC Pathfinder Initiative with Brazil, China, India and South Africa. Therefore, we hope there will be a number of proposals involving collaborations with South African researchers.

The deadline for applications is 8 September 2011. ESRC expect to announce decisions in April 2012, with projects funded under this initiative ideally commencing on 1 May 2012.
