“Trading in freedom”
One of the most visible changes in the social physiognomy of South Africa post-apartheid, is the emergence of a black elite, which visibly displays its newly acquired status. This development is all the more conspicuous, as it appears in stark contrast to wide-spread poverty and deepening inequality. The apparent intractability of what has been ritually, moralistically, socially-critically, and politically-programmatically denounced as a societal problem calls for further probing.
