Prof Midgeley visited our Department on 23 May 2011 by invitation of Prof Antoinette Lombard, our Head of Department, and led a group discussion on his latest co-edited publication, Social Work and Social Development: Theories and Skills for Developmental Social Work. The discussion group included staff, practitioners, and a group of postgraduate students in social development and policy. The group exchanged views and experiences regarding the practice of developmental social work, in general and in specialised fields. The discussions re-emphasised the relevance and importance of developmental social work and social development, with its focus on the social and economic empowerment of individuals, groups and communities, for the South African context.
