Deadline postponed to 30 September 2011
E-mail from Thomas Asher, Ph.D. | Program Director | Social Science Research Council
Next Generation Social Sciences in Africa offers three distinct competitive fellowship opportunities to support the advancement of social science faculty toward completion of doctoral degrees in Ghana, Nigeria, South Africa, Tanzania, and Uganda. Though the program is restricted to researchers working on peace, security, and development issues, this theme is intended to be interpreted broadly and creatively.
Our goal is to attract promising faculty who have yet to complete their dissertations. We are looking to assist such faculty members and provide them with resources to complete the degree as well as offer mentoring opportunities to help fellows hone the research questions they ask and enable them to engage and advance academic debates both across and within their disciplines.
Researchers might work on a range of substantive topics, to include, for example, work on markets and civil society, humanitarian intervention, human security, law and political practice, media and human rights, peace and reconciliation, public culture and associational life, religion and conflict resolution, social movements and democratic participation. We envision supporting a diverse set of projects grappling with a range of processes. Some, we hope, will examine large-scale phenomena and others small-scale social processes so that some applicants might propose projects exploring global flows of refugees across country borders and continents while others might look at street theater in refugee camps. Similarly, some applicants might test the proposition that global financial markets contribute to peace and stability while others might examine the role of local market culture in an unstable region. Above all projects should advance important fields of study and social science knowledge.

Subject: Next Generation Social Sciences in Africa Fellowship Program
Dear Professor Cheryl de la Rey,
I am writing to let you know about a new fellowship program, Next Generation Social Sciences in Africa, which offers three distinct competitive fellowship opportunities to support the advancement of social science faculty toward completion of doctoral degrees in Ghana, Nigeria, South Africa, Tanzania, and Uganda. Tom Asher, the Program Director, recently sent you a packet of information about the fellowships for dissemination at the University of Pretoria.
I have included additional information about the fellowship program below my signature. I hope you will share news of our fellowship opportunities with eligible colleagues and students in the social sciences departments. Our fellowship applications are all available on our website ( http://www.ssrc.org/programs/nextgenafrica/ ) and are due by August 31, 2011. We are also looking to identify a long-term point of contact at the University of Pretoria for future collaboration related to our fellowships.
Many thanks in advance, and we look forward to being in touch with you as we develop our new program.
Sincerely,
Kimberly

Dear colleagues,
I am thrilled to announce the official launch of the Next Generation Social Sciences in Africa ( /socialscienceresearchcouncil.createsend1.com/t/y/l/vuktlt/mlklkhhii/r/ ) fellowship program, which responds to a shortage of well-trained faculty now reaching crisis proportions in African higher education.
The new program offers three distinct competitive fellowship opportunities to support the advancement of social science faculty and promote interdisciplinary social science research in Ghana, Nigeria, South Africa, Tanzania, and Uganda. It will enable early-career social science faculty to complete doctoral degrees and conduct innovative, evidence-based research on peace, security, and development topics.
Please make note of our application deadline of August 31, 2011; application forms are available on our website ( /socialscienceresearchcouncil.createsend1.com/t/y/l/vuktlt/mlklkhhii/y/ ).
I sincerely appreciate your support of our vision to invest in the higher-education infrastructure across Africa. I would be grateful for your help in reaching out to institutions and individuals to spread the word about our three fellowship opportunities, which are generously funded by Carnegie Corporation of New York. Please also let me know if you have any questions or suggestions.
Sincerely,
Tom Asher

To be eligible for the $15,000 dissertation research fellowship ( /socialscienceresearchcouncil.createsend1.com/t/y/l/vuktlt/mlklkhhii/t/ ), applicants must have an approved dissertation proposal but will not yet have undertaken substantial dissertation research of nine months or more. To be eligible for the $15,000 dissertation completion fellowship ( /socialscienceresearchcouncil.createsend1.com/t/y/l/vuktlt/mlklkhhii/i/ ), applicants must be in the final year of writing and will have completed at least one dissertation chapter.
FELLOWSHIP TERMS
Strong proposals will offer clear and concise descriptions of the project and its significance and display thorough knowledge of relevant social science literature and methodologies. In addition, applicants must demonstrate that all proposed activities are feasible and can be completed in a timely manner. Proposals will be evaluated for these criteria by an independent, international committee of leading scholars from a range of social science disciplines.
Fellows must be willing to attend two workshops sponsored by the SSRC each year that are intended to help early-career faculty produce scholarly publications. Both workshops will be held in Africa, and travel costs will be covered for fellows. The program anticipates awarding approximately 45 fellowships in total each year.
