ISTR (International Society for Third Sector), founded in 1992 and based in Baltimore (USA), is a well-known, important international association which promotes research and education in the fields of civil society, philanthropy, and the non-profit sector, engaged in building a global community of scholars and interested others dedicated to the creation, discussion, and advancement of knowledge pertaining to the Third Sector and its impact on human and planetary well-being and development internationally.

The International Conference is held every two years, and only one of the many cities around the world which bid on hosting this very important event is chosen by the Executive Board as the winner.

The ForTeS Foundation made its bid to host seve! ral mont hs ago, and in October 2010, following numerous exchanges and onsite visits, the foundation learned that it had won this candidacy, an honor which may be considered the “World Champion” of the Third Sector.

Clearly the bid by ForTeS is to be understood as a bid by Siena and by all of Italy, and for this reason we believe its very important to have active participation by Italian researchers, experts, and scholars. We ask you to send your paper/presentation proposals by October 24, which is the deadline for the Call.

The cities which have hosted the International Conference in recent years include the following: (1994) Pecs, Hungary - II (1996) - Mexico City, Mexico - III (1998) Geneva, Switzerland - IV (2000) Dublin, Ireland – V (2002) Cape Town, South Africa - VI (2004) Toronto, Canada - VII 2006) Bangkok, Thailand - VIII (2008) Barcellona, Spain - IX (2010) Istanbul, Turkey.

To give an idea of the importance of the event, we can cite the following figures: We expect the participation of over 700 scholars coming from almost 80 organizations and institutions of the Third Sector, from over 70! nations .
