GLOBAL TRENDS 2030
Speakers:
• Prof Barry B Hughes, Director, Frederick S Pardee Center for International Futures, University of Denver
• Dr Jakkie Cilliers, Executive Director, Institute for Security Studies
• Ms Erin Torkelson, Institute for Security Studies
Futures studies are becoming more and more important as major transitions reshape the world towards multipolarity and complexity. Notwithstanding a persistent global economic crisis, economic growth has accelerated in Africa, apparently mirroring events in China and India in recent decades. Yet many uncertainties remain: global markets are volatile, commodity prices are affected by conflict, and the long term impact of climate change is only beginning to be understood. This seminar will attempt to apply the modelling tool developed by the IF Centre, to answer the question of what possibilities lie ahead for Africa. In conclusion, attention will be paid to the implications of these global trends for South Africa’s foreign policy. The seminar will also see the launch of the African Futures website, thereby making the IF software freely available.
This seminar is funded by the OSF-SA as part of a project on South African Foreign Policy.
