VISITING FOREIGN NATIONALS

Posted on June 27, 2012

The Department of Home Affairs will consider a section 11(2) permit request in line with the Immigration Directive 29 of 2011, i.e. for immediate short term or urgent cases of limited duration and where a person does not qualify in any of the work permit categories. Also note that the section 11(2) permit is once-off and not renewable in South Africa.

Departments will have to apply in advance for permits on behalf of the visitors. The University has contracted PwC as our immigration consultants to assist with applications for Section 11 (2) permits. If PwC’s services are contracted to assist in the application, the costs will be for the account of the relevant Department as there is no institutional budget to cover the expenses.

Persons exempt from visa control

PwC requires the following information in order to facilitate the process for persons exempt from visa control (Cost R500 per permit):

1. A clear copy of the passport

2. Flight details

3. An invitation letter - if an invitation letter is not available, a document stating the purpose and period of the visit is required.

PwC will submit the required motivation to the Department of Home Affairs (“DHA”)

Timeframe:

• The DHA requires a minimum of seven (7) days to process an application.

• PwC needs at least two (2) days to process the request from the University.

With consideration to the above timeframes, PwC should therefore receive all the necessary information at least ten (10) days prior to the actual visit.

Persons subject to visa control:

PwC requires the following information in order to facilitate the process for persons subject to visa control (Cost R3 750 per permit):

1. Completed application form

2. Invitation letter

3. Return flight ticket

4. Proof of available funds

Visitors should apply for a visitor’s visa at the applicable South African embassy. Once PwC receives the request from the University, they will initiate the process.

Timeframe:

• PWC requires three (3) days from the date of receiving all documents to prepare the application and delivery to the applicant.

• The South African embassies require five (5) to ten (10) days to process a visa application.

With consideration to the above timeframes the expected duration of the process will be twenty (20) days.
