RSA Presentation: Does charity help to alleviate the suffering of the poor? 27 Jul

Posted on July 26, 2012

Does charity help to alleviate the suffering of the poor? Or does it merely draw out their agony? Could it be an effective vehicle of social change and the just redistribution of wealth, or are more severe structural changes necessary? Is charity truly motivated by human kindness, or just an excuse to ease the conscience of the rich?

Are human beings truly altruistic? Do we have some inherent font of love and care for our fellow humans, or do we simply pretend to care so that they will do the same for us? Can one scientifically measure and determine the baseline of human altruism?

These are some of the questions that will be considered.
