The objective of this important seminar will be to formulate a policy regarding the medium of language in the Faculty of Humanities. The recommendation of this seminar will be taken to the Heads of Department and the Faculty Board for ratification so that the policy can be implemented in 2013 or 2014. The question is: should the faculty continue to teach classes in both English and Afrikaans or should we shift to a single language policy and teach English only classes? Please come and share your views so an informed faculty-wide decision can be made.
Prof Henk Potgieter, Ancient Languages, will give an overview of the current faculty language policy.
Dr Irma du Plessis, Sociology, will share her thoughts on the benefits of teaching in English only.
Dr Jackie Grobler, Historical and Heritage Studies, will share his view on why we should retain both languages as the medium of instruction.
