Africa

Twenty years ago no one believed in the possibility of a developmental state in Africa. Such honour was reserved for the so-called East Asian Tigers. More recently, an ideological current is afoot which claims that Africa’s economic development does not require state guidance or assistance as the neo-liberal political reforms of the last two decades are producing economic growth in the continent.

This lecture challenges this claim and provides counter evidence that supports the need for developmentalist states in Africa, including South Africa.
