Centre for the Study of Aids joins the Faculty of Humanities

Posted on June 25, 2013

The Centre for the Study of AIDS was established as a stand-alone centre in 1999. It is the hub of UP’s response to HIV and Aids – working with students, staff and communities; national, regional and international universities; and other bodies such as UN agencies, embassies and donors.

The CSA has an on-campus staff of 15, an off-campus staff of five and over 450 student volunteers, counsellors and trainers. It collaborates with all faculties and support services, offers a wide range of services to staff and students and has a strong partnership with the Tshwane Mayoral committee. Each year the CSA publishes the AIDS Review, regarded as some of the best research and critique on HIV and Aids in South Africa, and which enjoys wide national and international circulation.

The CSA has become focussed on research and publishing. Because of the strengthening of research within the CSA it was important for the Centre to seek an intellectual home. The CSA is now part of the Faculty of Humanities and reports to Professor Norman Duncan, the Dean of Humanities.

The CSA will continue to work closely on HIV and Aids with all faculties and departments throughout the University, as well on the wider social and economic issues raised by the epidemic.

Additional information about the CSA can be found at their web site at www.csa.za.org

They can be contacted at  012 420 4391, or [email protected].
