Vice-Chancellor de la Rey was joined by Prof Norman Duncan, Faculty of Humanities Dean, and the project lead researchers: Dr Detlev Krige, Faculty of Humanities, Department of Anthropology; Prof Elfriede Dreyer, Faculty of Humanities, Department of Visual Arts; and Prof Karin van Marle, Faculty of Law, Department of Jurisprudence, to welcome various on- and off-campus project stakeholders, including the Executive Mayor of the City of Tshwane, Councillor Kgosientso Ramokgopa. Councillor Ramokgopa and several City of Tshwane delegates were present to show their support and confirm their commitment to partnering with the University of Pretoria in this exciting city-wide research project.

The Capital Cities Project is a cross-faculty research project initiated by the Faculty of Humanities, but involving several other faculties within the University of Pretoria community, through which researchers and postgraduate students will collaborate by asking new questions about the city of Pretoria/Tshwane as a city, and as a capital city. The uniqueness of capital cities in general and our capital city in particular, will be investigated from the viewpoint of a variety of disciplines including arts and language, architecture, urban planning, law, history, social work, psychology, gender studies, political science and economics.
