Funding opportunity

Competitive Programme for Unrated Researchers (CSUR): Call for proposals 2014 - 2016

Aim

1.     To provide support to researchers who do not hold a current NRF rating at the time of submitting a CSUR application or receiving a grant if successful; and

2.     To provide support to researchers who do not have any of the NRF capacity development funding instruments such as Thuthuka.

Internal Deadline

27 September 2013 (Internal UP deadline)

Who can apply

1.     Active researchers with no NRF rating;

2.     Applicants may be of any nationality;

3.     Applicants must hold a research doctorate;

4.     Applicants with contract appointments must clearly state the term of contract in the application, of which must be at least the duration of the funding period of the project;

5.     A contract researcher appointed at UP on behalf of a third party to fulfil a specific function for the latter does not qualify;

6.     Applicants who receive support from the Thuthuka Funding does not qualify;

7.     UP Retired academics/researchers who meet these set criteria:

7.1 Do not hold a current and valid NRF rating;

7.2 resident in RSA;

7.3 active researcher with a distinguished track record in research and postgraduate student supervision;

7.4 actively mentoring/training postgraduate student/young research staff; and

7.5 spend a maximum of reasonable time (6 months minimum) at UP for the purpose of research and research capacity development.

Types of support

1.     Research materials and supplies (consumables);

2.     Grantholder-linked Student Support;

3.     Staff development grants for staff members, other than the applicant , who will obtain Masters or Doctoral degree by participating in the grantholder’s NRF/CSUR funded project, and who are (co-) supervised by the applicant;

4.     Research instrumentation or equipment. Maximum contribution of R200 000 once in a 3-year cycle;

5.     One local conference attendance per annum for the applicant, and/or team member through the project, to present a paper or poster;

6.     One international conference attendance;

7.     Applicant’s total research-operating budget request must not be less than R25 000 per annum;

8.     Local travel for research purpose, e.g. field visits, use of research facilities, etc;

9.     Sabbatical and study visits, both local and international;

10. Visiting scientists; and

11. Ad hoc research/technical assistance.

Applications

2.     All application materials must be submitted electronically at NRF’s Submission System ; /s:/nrfsubmission.nrf.ac.za/nrfmkii/ ;

3.     Outcomes can be expected in January 2014; and

4.     Researchers are requested to verify their outputs on the Landing Page by selecting the type of output under the heading “To be Reviewed” and verifying each output individually until there are none left to be reviewed. These CV inputs will be used in all the detailed assessment processes.

Minimum expected outputs at end of each support cycle (3 years)

1.     A minimum of three publications on the funded project in peer-reviewed journals, or any other recognised equivalent research output as dictated by the field/discipline; and

2.     At least two postgraduate students at Masters and/or Doctoral level supervised or co-supervised.
