On November 13th, the School of Medicine proudly hosted its inaugural Master’s Research Day, an event dedicated to showcasing the diverse and impactful research conducted by its master’s students across clinical and basic sciences. This event served as a platform for fostering collaboration and knowledge exchange.

The day commenced with a welcoming address by the Chairperson of the School, Professor Soma-Pillay, who underscored the importance of creating an environment where clinical and basic sciences converge. She emphasised that the initiative reflects the school’s commitment to advancing research that directly enhances healthcare delivery and drives scientific innovation.

Adding to the event’s prestige was the generous support from RMB Private Bank and the South African Medical Association (SAMA).

A key highlight of the day was the recognition of excellent research efforts through the presentation of three awards:

  • Best Clinical Presentation: Dr. Y Katz, Department of Neurology
  • Best Basic Science Presentation: Mr. D Chetty, Department of Pharmacology
  • Best Trans-/Interdisciplinary Collaboration Project: Dr. A Carelse, Department of Chemical Pathology

The presentations showcased the relevance of the students' work in addressing pressing medical challenges, driving home the importance of integrated, interdisciplinary approaches in modern research.

The Master’s Research Day represents a significant stride in promoting collaboration between clinical and basic sciences—an essential foundation for fostering innovative solutions to healthcare challenges. Its success has set the stage for a growing tradition aimed at nurturing a vibrant research culture within the School of Medicine.

Reflecting on the day’s success, Professor Soma-Pillay remarked, “This event is a testament to the talent and dedication of our master’s students. It marks the beginning of a journey where clinical and basic sciences intersect, ultimately contributing to the betterment of healthcare.”
