Posted on November 04, 2024

On October 25, 2024, stakeholders from Ward 55—including COSUP, SAPRIN, UP Medical Students, SAVF, Hercules CPF, Hercules Clinic, MYDO, DITIRO Rehab Center, TLF, Tshwane Blind Care, Gov Communications, Wits RHI, the City of Tshwane, Socio Tech, Hercules SAPS, and Gauteng Emergency Services—came together to host a successful event aimed at raising awareness about two pressing issues: diabetes and substance abuse. The event, attended by various community stakeholders, highlighted the devastating impact of substance abuse on society, including its contributions to rising poverty, crime, dysfunctional families, and psychiatric illness.

In collaboration with various health stakeholders, the City of Tshwane extended an invitation to diabetic patients and community members interested in learning about the available health services around their community. The event provided a platform for the community to gain knowledge on diabetes, the dangers of using illegal substances, and important aspects of care for diabetic individuals such as foot care, diet, eye testing, rehabilitation, and mental health services.

The presence of MMC of Health and Ward 55 councilor added significance to the occasion.

The event was carefully planned and executed with the aim of informing and educating the community about these pressing issues. The focus was on creating a platform for different organizations and community members to come together and address the issue of substance abuse in a unified manner.

One of the primary goals of the event was to introduce various organizations to each other and establish working relationships. By doing so, the community can coordinate efforts and work towards combating the problem of substance abuse together. This collaborative approach is crucial in tackling such complex and far-reaching issues.

The event was a testament to the power of unity and collective action. It brought together a diverse group of stakeholders, including healthcare professionals, social workers, law enforcement, community leaders, and concerned citizens. Each one of them played a vital role in addressing the issue of substance abuse and its effects on the community.

The day started with informative presentations on diabetes and substance abuse, covering topics such as prevention, treatment, and support services available in the community. This was followed by panel discussions where different stakeholders and community members shared their experiences, insights, and solutions to tackle these issues.

The event also featured interactive activities and visiting different stalls, providing a deeper understanding of the impact of substance abuse on individuals, families, and society as a whole. It was heartening to see members of the community actively participating and engaging in discussions, demonstrating their commitment to creating a positive change. The SAPRIN staff represented the project with utmost professionalism and highlighting the important work in the community. The positive responses from attendees are a testament to the impact of

the project. Our stand was well-organized and visually appealing, thanks to the pamphlets that were available for distribution.

Many expressed their gratitude for the opportunity to learn and collaborate with others in the community. The event not only raised awareness but also created a sense of unity and collective responsibility towards addressing the issue of substance abuse and diabetes.

This event was a step in the right direction, and with the establishment of strong working relationships, we can continue to make a meaningful impact.
