The Faculty of Health Sciences at the University of Pretoria is proud to celebrate Maryna Botha from the Department of Physiology, who has been recognised as one of the top three finalists for Solidarity’s Office Champion 2024. Botha, nominated by her Head of Department, Prof. Annie Joubert, exemplifies dedication and professionalism honed over her 30-year career as an office practitioner. The winner of this prestigious award will be announced in December 2024.

Botha’s recognition highlights her vast experience and commitment to her role. With formal and informal training, including in-house courses at the University of Pretoria, she embraces ongoing professional development. Recently, she achieved a Community Business Me (CBM) training certificate and attended the Personal Administrators Conference South Africa (PACSA) in Johannesburg. This dedication to lifelong learning keeps her at the forefront of office management excellence.

For Botha, communication stands out as the most essential skill for an office practitioner. “Listening first and fully understanding a question or request before responding is key to achieving success,” she shared. Her emphasis on communication reflects the importance of being able to engage effectively with students, staff, parents, and department leaders, ensuring a seamless flow of information throughout the department.

Beyond communication, Botha is well-versed in computer skills and digital proficiency, essential tools in her role. She is responsible for managing highly confidential information, accurately entering student scores, and formatting exams and tests for two faculties. Handling capital and operational budgets with the utmost precision, Botha displays reliability and meticulous attention to detail in all aspects of her work.

Her contributions to the department extend beyond her daily responsibilities. She is an advocate for United Nations Sustainable Development Goal 3 (Health and Well-being), supporting both faculty and societal goals. “My outlook as an office practitioner is that the phrase ‘can’t do’ doesn’t exist in my vocabulary,” Botha said. Her readiness to handle each day’s challenges with professionalism and courtesy reflects her unwavering commitment to the faculty and its success.

The Faculty of Health Sciences at the University of Pretoria congratulates Ms. Botha on her well-deserved recognition as a top finalist in Solidarity’s Office Champion 2024, acknowledging her exceptional service and positive impact within the university community.
