The University of Pretoria celebrates Dr. Lané Prigge, Senior Lecturer in Clinical Anatomy, for her achievement of receiving the Y2 NRF rating, marking a significant milestone in her research career. Specialising in clinical anatomy, Dr. Prigge focuses on neuroanatomy, specifically the brain's vasculature and peripheral nerves, and their applications in medical procedures.
"I am deeply honoured and humbled to receive a Y2 rating," Dr. Prigge said. "As a young researcher, it's natural to wonder about the impact of your work, and this recognition affirms the merit and significance of my research. This achievement fuels my passion to advance our field and contribute meaningfully."
Dr. Prigge’s doctoral thesis focused on regional nerve blocks in paediatric patients, with an emphasis on optimising techniques for anaesthesia. "Currently, my postgraduate students are engaged in research exploring the vasculature of the brain and mapping peripheral nerves for nerve transfers and regional nerve blocks. It’s incredibly rewarding to collaborate across medical specialities and see our research directly improve procedural outcomes."
When asked how she plans to use her Y2 status to make a difference, Dr. Prigge shared: "This recognition enables me to apply for additional funding, which will support my postgraduate students and their research projects. By helping them achieve their personal goals, we collectively add value to the field of clinical anatomy."
The journey to achieving the Y2 rating was rigorous. "I attended various training sessions and consulted with NRF-rated researchers to ensure my application met the necessary standards," she explained. "Mentors played a crucial role in helping me highlight the importance of my work, and their guidance was invaluable."
Reflecting on what this rating means to her as a researcher, Dr. Prigge said, "The NRF rating serves as a benchmark for comparing the quality of my research with that of others globally. It validates my research outputs and reinforces my commitment to advancing the field of anatomy."
Dr. Prigge encourages young researchers to approach the NRF rating process with passion and dedication. "It can be daunting, but the affirmation it provides makes all the hard work worthwhile. Passion for your research not only makes the process more enjoyable but also makes the final achievement more rewarding."
With her Y2 rating, Dr. Prigge looks forward to advancing medical knowledge through her research in clinical anatomy, while continuing to mentor students and contribute to significant medical developments.
