The Faculty of Health Sciences at the University of Pretoria (UP) through its Transformation Committee is taking proactive steps to promote inclusivity and respect within its academic community through raising awareness of the UP Trans-Protocol initiative. Led by Prof Funeka Sokudela, Faculty of Health Sciences Transformation Committee Chairperson, this initiative aims to drive cultural change within the Faculty, creating an environment where diversity is celebrated and all members feel respected and valued.
"At the heart of our efforts is a commitment to promoting inclusivity and upholding fundamental human rights," Prof Sokudela stated.
"The FTC believes in providing a platform for meaningful engagement and dialogue, ensuring that all voices are heard and considered in our pursuit of transformation."
The UP Trans-Protocol is aimed at strengthening UP's Anti-Discrimination Policy by raising awareness and combating discrimination against transgender, intersex, gender non-conforming, and non-binary individuals within the student and staff body. It emphasizes creating a supportive and affirming environment where everyone can thrive academically and personally.
On Wednesday, 21 August from 12:00 – 13:00, the FTC, in collaboration with the Transformation Office and the Centre for Sexualities, AIDS and Gender (CSA&G), will host a hybrid lunch-hour discussion on the UP Trans-Protocol. This event aims to educate and engage the UP community on the protocol's guidelines and significance, encouraging participation from staff and students alike.
"The UP Trans-Protocol is everyone's business," Pierre Brouard, Deputy Director of UP's Centre for Sexualities, AIDS and Gender (CSA&G).emphasised, "as it lays the groundwork for an inclusive and non-discriminatory university. It underscores our commitment to celebrating diversity and fostering a culture of respect and understanding." Prof Sokudela highlighted the FTC's ongoing collaboration with UP specialists to raise awareness about available university resources that support diversity and inclusion. "We encourage all members of our community to utilize these resources," she added, "as they are essential in creating a supportive and enriching academic environment."
The Faculty of Health Sciences at UP prides itself on its tradition of excellence, which includes embracing diversity and promoting cultural competence among its staff and students. The FTC, comprising representatives from school chairpersons, professionals, and students, plays a key role in addressing critical issues and driving positive change within the Faculty.
Looking ahead, the FTC remains committed to bringing UP's policies and protocols to life through awareness campaigns and strategic collaborations with specialists, centers, and organizations. Their goal is to ensure that UP continues to lead in fostering a respectful, inclusive, and supportive environment for all.
